Deon's Innovative Approach to Sustainable Rondavel Construction
Deon, a South African inventor, developed a practical method to simplify the construction of rondavels, traditional round homes commonly found in South Africa. In response to the country's housing needs, he designed a precast mould that allows people to create their own angular blocks, specifically shaped for building rondavels. This approach made construction more accessible and affordable, enabling individuals to use local materials and take part in building their own homes with greater ease.
Rondavels are a particularly efficient housing solution. Their circular design offers strong structural integrity, making them more durable against harsh weather conditions. The materials typically used—such as stone, thatch, and mud—are easy to source and cost-effective, reducing overall construction costs. Additionally, the round shape naturally regulates temperature, keeping interiors cooler in summer and warmer in winter, which makes them energy efficient. Deon's invention made it possible for more people to benefit from this traditional yet effective building style.
Deon took his innovative idea to the South African government, hoping it would contribute to solving the housing crisis. Though he didn’t have much success in gaining government support, he continued to focus on his work. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, it deeply impacted his business, and unfortunately, Deon fell ill and passed away shortly after.
However, his legacy remains strong. A rondavel built at Sugar Village, using his mould system, serves as a lasting example of what can be achieved with his method. The building also includes a rainwater harvesting system, promoting sustainability. While Deon was not able to see his invention fully realized, his contribution to housing solutions in South Africa lives on, providing a valuable approach that continues to inspire others in addressing the housing needs of the country.
